We have started a new sermon series called “Take Me To Your Leader” and this past week I was researching various leaders I found in the bible. It is very interesting to read about the reluctant leaders in the bible. I found myself focusing on 2 of them. Moses and Saul.
Moses was a quirky kind of guy, but most people will say he was a great leader. However, he didn’t start out so great. When God told him to go back to Egypt to set the Israelites free he argued with God. He made excuses, he needed tons of reassurance and after getting it he finally asked God to send someone else.
Saul started out as a fairly decent guy. He was out looking for his dad’s donkeys and was looking for some help from Samuel to find them. Samuel not only told him the herd was fine, he also let Saul know he was going to be the first King of Israel. The day that Samuel called out all the tribes to anoint Saul King, they couldn’t find him. Where was he? Hiding in the baggage. Imagine your told your going to be king and you hide in the luggage. Talk about reluctant.
Two reluctant leaders…one of them stayed dependent on God and the other disobeyed God repeatedly to the point of losing the Holy Spirit and his kingship.
A lesson for reluctant leaders….God wants us to remain dependent on God’s strength, not our own. Stay dependent and obedient. The key to being a great leader even if your reluctant.
